You can start business operations as a self-employed individual with a business name or as an agricultural operator in MyTax. Other company types, such as limited liability companies, general partnerships and limited partnerships, must be founded in the Business Information System (ytj.fi).
How to start business operations
You will receive instructions for filing and paying taxes
After you have submitted the start-up notification, we will enter your company’s details in our register of taxpayers. After the company is in the Tax Administration’s registers, we will send you instructions on how to file and pay your taxes.
Check which registers your company must be entered in.
When will I receive my business ID?
If you submit the start-up notification electronically in MyTax or in the Business Information System, you will receive your Business ID immediately. If you submit the notification on a paper form, you will see your Business ID within 3 days on the Business Information System.
When can I start business operations?
If your business operation does not require an official permit, you can start your operation as soon as you have submitted the start-up notification.
After you have submitted the notification and received a Business ID, you can
- open a separate bank account for business transactions
- arrange your bookkeeping
- buy any necessary insurance and take care of other practical matters.
Contact your insurance company to learn more about the statutory pension insurance (YEL) for the self-employed.
When can I start invoicing?
You can start invoicing as soon as you have a Business ID. If you register for VAT, you can add VAT to your sales invoices after your company has been entered in the VAT register.
If you have requested entry in the prepayment register, you should wait until you receive the registration decision. Until then, your customers will have to withhold tax on their payments to you.
Registration in the Tax Administration’s registers takes approximately 3 weeks. See more detailed processing times.
