Why do I receive a tax refund or why do I have to pay back taxes?

The tax decision accompanying your pre-completed tax return shows you if you will get a tax refund or if you will have to pay back taxes. In other words, you have paid either too much or too little tax in view of your actual income and deductions during the year.

If back taxes are imposed on you, your tax rate may have been too low in view of you income or you may have had an unjustified deduction on your tax card based on travel expenses, for example. Back taxes may also have been imposed if you have sold securities or other assets with a profit, for example.

You can compare the tax decision with the previous year’s tax card

You can check and compare the information in the tax decision for 2023 with the prepayment decision for 2023, i.e. with the calculation on which your tax card's tax rate for the year was based. If you have changed your tax card during the year, use the latest calculation. Compare the information to see if your final income and deductions are in line with the information in the prepayment decision.

You can find the pre-completed tax return, tax decision and prepayment decision for 2023 under Decisions and letters on the Communication tab in MyTax.

What does a tax decision look like?

Please note that if you make changes to the pre-completed tax return, the amount of tax refund or back taxes may change.
