Some 400,000 taxpayers will receive a message from the Tax Administration about e-invoices in May

Tax Administration Bulletin, 5/5/2026

The Tax Administration will soon send out electronic “e-invoice proposals”, meaning a payee's suggestion for you to start paying the bills as e-invoices. These messages will be delivered to taxpayers whose bank account is in Nordea or OP. We’d like to recommend that you accept the suggestion, because much fewer tax decisions, invoices, etc. are now being sent by traditional paper post.

The Tax Administration sends the messages on e-invoicing to the taxpayers who have notified the Tax Administration of their bank account in Nordea or OP, and who have a real estate tax, a back tax or a prepayment falling due some time in 2026. Customers of Nordea Bank will get the e-invoice proposals during the first or second week of May, and OP's customers will receive theirs a little later during May.

“Your e-bank, whether on your mobile phone or computer workstation, will keep showing our message for 30 days. If you accept, you will receive e-invoices for real estate tax, prepayments, back taxes, inheritance taxes and gift taxes”, says Irene Laine, Senior Adviser with the Tax Administration.

Avoid late-payment interest

At present, with the Digital priority approach, official correspondence from Finnish public authorities reaches many taxpayers in an electronic format. For users of Suomi.fi or electronic tax mail, important tax-related documents such as decisions on assessment and instructions for tax payment are only accessible through MyTax. Paper letters are sent only to individuals who do not use e-services at all or who have selected paper mail.

E-invoices make it easier to pay taxes and help you remember the due date even if you have missed an e-mail. The e-invoice will appear in your e-bank. You will see it well in advance of its due date, and all the required payment details are pre-filled. If you are a user of the mobile app version of either Nordea’s or OP’s e-bank, you can set up notifications to inform you of any new e-invoices.

Those who use the e-invoice for paying their taxes are in a better position to avoid having to pay interest on overdue payments. Starting the next day, after you forget to pay a tax, there will be a penalty interest for late payment. For example, the rate of late-payment interest on inheritance tax is 4.5% and for other taxes it is 9.5% this year.

You can enroll with the e-invoice program safely

Nordea Bank, the OP cooperative bank, and the Tax Administration will work together when distributing the messages. As a result, the customers of these banks will see the e-invoice proposals appearing in their mobile and e-banks. The proposals will not be sent anywhere else. To accept the suggested e-invoice is safe.

”Any taxpayer or customer of a bank who receives no message regarding the e-invoice program still has the opportunity to ask for e-invoicing on their initiative, either through their e-bank or on MyTax. You can make this request at any time. If a customer never uses the bank's online service it might be advisable to start using direct-debiting to make tax payments more simple”, says Irene Laine.

The Tax Administration will schedule additional reminder messages to MyTax for those who received the e-invoice proposal and did not give acceptance to it. There will be a notification appearing in Suomi.fi Messages. The reminder itself will only be accessible through MyTax. If the Tax Administration has your telephone number, you may receive a text message reminder.

Note: Suomi.fi Messages and text messages sent by the Tax Administration never contain links.
