Declaration of demonstration use – how to fill out the form
Complete and send this declaration before a motor vehicle – intended to be sold in Finland – is placed into service as a tax-exempt demonstration vehicle. Demonstration means that the car or other vehicle can be shown, taken for a test drive, or presented to potential buyers. These activities can continue for max. 3 days per customer. A vehicle can be in tax-exempt demonstration use for max. 9 months following the start date declared on the form. The party that arranges the demonstration must be an importer, a manufacturer or a sales company of motor vehicles.
Complete and submit the declaration in MyTax. Select > Car tax > Declaration of tax-exempt use > Demonstration use.
If necessary, you can submit the declaration form on paper (Form 1250). For more information, go to Forms.
Once you have submitted the declaration, the Tax Administration will send you a letter confirming that the declaration has been received. If you are a user of MyTax, you will receive the confirmation letter immediately in your MyTax mailbox, where you can print it out. Unless your company has activated Suomi.fi messages and chosen not to receive paper mail, you will also receive the letter by post. Keep the letter with you in the vehicle either as a print-out or in a mobile device. You must be able to show the letter to supervisory authorities such as the police or Customs if requested.

VIN (vehicle identification number)
Enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) here. The VIN is an individualised string of numbers and letters to identify the motor vehicle.
Enter the VIN in the same format as it is in the official documents. In general, VINs consist of 17 characters including special characters. For EC/EU type-approved vehicles, the three letters I, O and Q are not allowed in a VIN so as to not confuse them with digits. The character-length limit and the above restriction against certain letters of the alphabet does not apply to the VINs of other than EC/EU approved vehicles. This means that if your vehicle is imported from the USA, Japan or from a number of other countries, it may have a VIN that contains an I, O or Q.
The vehicle is new/used
Tick the appropriate box to indicate whether the vehicle is new or used. Motor vehicles are considered new if they have had no vehicle registration so far, and have never been placed into operation on the road.
Please note that for purposes of car taxes, a vehicle will also be seen as new in the event that after being in Finland, it was exported temporarily and vehicle registration in a foreign country was obtained. When the vehicle returns to Finland, it will be seen as new.
Odometer reading at the start of demonstration use in Finland
Enter the odometer reading in exact kilometres, without rounding up the figure. Please note that almost always, the reading of a new vehicle is higher than 0.
Start date of demonstration use in Finland
Enter the start date. This means the date when it is first driven on the road within the territory of Finland. For example, if the vehicle arrives at a seaport and is then driven away from the port, the start date would be the day when it is driven away from there.
Vehicle category
If the vehicle is already registered, indicate the category in accordance with its vehicle registration. Otherwise, select the category where it will belong when registered.
