Changes to Tax Administration APIs in 2024
The Tax Administration’s APIs allow for tax data to be transferred automatically and in real time between the Tax Administration’s systems and the software used by taxpayers and stakeholders.
New APIs and new features to existing APIs
Reporting rental income
This new API is intended for companies that manage their clients’ rental income. With this API, the company or platform can report rental income and related deductions to the Tax Administration on behalf of private individuals. The API will become available in early 2024.
Reporting information on profit distribution
This new API enables limited companies and cooperatives to report information on profit distribution, such as the amounts of dividends and additional dividends distributed, even after the tax return has been filed. This API can also be used by accounting firms that report profit distributions on behalf of their clients. The API will become available in early 2024.
Requesting data on share values
This new API is intended for limited companies and cooperatives. This API enables companies to request the comparison value and mathematical value of their own share. The API will become available in early 2024.
APIs for the EMCS (Excise Movement and Control System)
The EMCS is used for reporting and controlling the movement of alcohol, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and liquid energy products. New APIs will be implemented to the EMCS which will allow users to request information related to export error messages and cancellations. In addition, new features will be introduced to existing APIs: read more. The changes will enter into effect in February 2024.
New services
Notification service
The notification service will inform the API user whenever there are changes to a specific taxpayer’s details in the Tax Administration’s systems. Currently, users can retrieve a list of changed taxpayer details from the service. In February 2024, a new version of the service will become available, allowing users to receive notifications of changes in real time.
With this new notification service, API users will no longer need to constantly check their customers’ infromation for changes. Instead, they can simply retrieve any new or changed information when it is updated. This will reduce unnecessary resource use and data traffic.
The notification service is available for excise duty APIs connected to the EMCS. In future, the service will also be made available for other APIs, such as tax card inquiries.
Suomi.fi authorisation token
Some APIs require the user to have a Suomi.fi authorisation in order for them to be able to manage the tax matters of another individual or company. Until now, Tax Administration APIs have checked the user’s Suomi.fi authorisation separately in connection with each API call. In future, the software using the API will be able to retrieve an authorisation token beforehand for each taxpayer relevant to the tax matter in question. This means that authorisations will no longer need to be checked separately for each API call. This will speed up the use of APIs and reduce unnecessary data traffic.
The Suomi.fi authorisation token API was published 31 August 2023. It will become mandatory on 1 May 2024.
More new APIs are coming
In 2024, new APIs are planned for excise duties on beverage containers, soft drinks, alcohol, and electricity.
