Activate Suomi.fi Messages – receive a notification when a loan is applied for in your name

10/7/2024

In future, the Positive credit register will send a customer a notification through Suomi.fi Messages when a lender requests a credit register extract about the customer’s data. To receive a notification, the customer must have activated Suomi.fi Messages.

On 9 October 2024, a new feature will be introduced in the Positive credit register: the customer will be sent a notification through Suomi.fi Messages when a lender requests a credit register extract about their data. The customer can view the content of the extract and the details of the lender who requested the extract by logging in to the register’s e-service.

Notifications help you notice any misuse of your data

When a lender requests a credit register extract about you, you will receive a notification about it through Suomi.fi Messages on the next day. The notifications help you notice if someone is applying for a loan in your name or if a lender is requesting your registered data without a justified reason. You will receive only one notification per day regardless of whether one or more extracts have been requested.

In addition to the voluntary ban on credits, these notifications are an important tool for private individuals for protecting and monitoring the use of their data and for noticing any irregularities. They help you keep track of who has processed your loan data and when. Because of this, you will be able to react without delay if you notice anything suspicious.

“We are happy we can provide individuals with an opportunity to monitor the extracts requested about their data. For example, individuals subject to a data leak will receive a notification if someone attempts to misuse their data and apply for a loan in their name,” says Sanna Heimola, Project Manager of the project to establish a positive credit register.

Did you receive a notification even though you have not applied for a loan? Do as follows.

If you receive a notification that a new credit register extract has been requested about your data even though you have not applied for a new loan, or if you do not recognize an extract displayed in the register's e-service, you should act immediately.

  • Log in to the register's e-service and check which lender has requested the extract and what information has been included in the extract.
  • If the extract appears to be unfounded – if, for example, you have not applied for a new loan – or if you are not familiar with the lender that has requested the extract, contact the lender in question to straighten out the matter. If you are unable to contact the lender, you can also contact our customer service.

You may also consider setting a voluntary ban on credits for yourself if you suspect that your data is misused.

“Not everyone notices that their information has fallen into the wrong hands. A notification from the register that a loan has been applied for in their name may be the first indication that their data has been leaked and that someone is attempting to misuse it,” says Sanna Heimola.

Beware of scams – official notifications do not contain links

Official notifications from the register do not contain links or ask you to submit your personal data or sensitive credit information. Never click a link in a message or log in through such a link to a service but always enter the address of the service in the browser’s address bar. Also keep in mind that the register does not send notifications by text message.

What to do to receive notifications

In order that you could receive notifications of credit register extracts requested about your data, you must activate Suomi.fi Messages. After this, messages from all organisations using the Suomi.fi Messages service will be delivered to you electronically, both to your email and the Suomi.fi application on your phone. You cannot receive the messages on paper.

If you do not want to receive notifications of credit register extracts, you can disable them in the register’s e-service. Note that you must go to the Suomi.fi service and read the notifications you receive. If you do not log in to Suomi.fi to read a notification within a week of its arrival, you will receive a reminder, even if you have checked the content of the requested credit register extract in the register’s e-service.
